Corrections on Sizing and Historical Fits

The people here at protechelmet.com have been around since before the Mosa Sports days. We were testing and selling helmets long before Vans, Dye Precision, Bravo Sports, or Triple Eight came along to take control of the brand. Many of us have worn Pro-Tec® helmets since the early eighties.

Today, when ordering your Classic helmet, it isn't going to fit exactly like it did in 2005. Equipment, tooling, and molds change over time — when a new tool is made, there's what's called a "shrinkage rate" on the plastic, and the goal is always to minimize variance, but that isn't always the end result. This can cause the sizing of newer models to run slightly different from previous fits.

We know this because we've been distributing Pro-Tec® helmets to customers worldwide for over two decades, and protechelmet.com has inventory pre-dating all the newer manufacturers, going back as far as 2004.

The size chart above is correct for helmets manufactured after 2015, matching the chart posted on protecbrand.com for their newer models.

Size Chart Comparison (2004–2014)

A Large meant you were wearing a Large!

2004-2014 Size Chart

Previous owners of Pro-Tec® models, please note: if you fit into a Large helmet prior to 2014, you'll now fit into a Medium. If you were a Medium, you're now a Small.

Comparing the new Pro-Tec® size chart to a standard universal hat size, the new chart runs one size up. In other words: a Medium is a Large, and a Small is a Medium for SXP hard foam sizes.

If you need an XL, order a Large. If you need Large, order a Medium. If you need Medium, order a Small.

We'll work with every customer to make sure you receive the proper fit — whether that's a liner kit to dial it in, or processing a return to get you into the right size. In the meantime, go one size down from what you're used to when ordering SXP hard foam.

SXP vs 2-Stage Foam

SXP vs 2-Stage Foam Comparison
2 Stage Foam

2 Stage Foam

Thick foam that attaches to the shell of the helmet via velcro tabs. Notice the thickness of the removable foam insert — the crown piece is not replaceable. 2 Stage Foam is more comfortable and fits more snugly, giving helmets a lower profile on the head.

SXP Foam

SXP Foam (CPSC Certified)

Not removable — permanently connected to the shell, with a thinner padded liner attached via velcro tabs. The padded inserts are much thinner than 2 Stage Foam and the crown piece is replaceable. SXP provides more impact resistance, giving helmets a bigger profile on the head.

CPSC certified (SXP foam) helmets are mandatory in California.

Surface activated eXpanded Polypropylene (SXP) is a patented, multi-impact helmet technology ideal for action sports athletes.
